Running shader effect asynchronously

I've written a couple of shader effects, but I believe I want to apply the effect asynchronously. For example, I want the host WPF app to call the effect to apply the shader, but then return immediately and wait for more user events (mouse, etc.) Some pixels may take some time to render, some longer than others, and I don't want the host app to wait for all pixels to render. Also, the host needs to be able to "abort" whatever rendering is still in process and begin a new render with new parameters.
